NEW YEAR, NEW YOU; REALLY?

Happy New Year Folks :)
We have finally reached 2013 after slogging through 2012.
I know we are nearly 2 weeks in, but I also know that I have been spammed with enough 'New Year' based emails and articles to know that most of them go in the bin......so I am posting this on the 12th in the hopes that it will catch your eye now that all the hype has died down a little.

You may be thinking that the title of this post is a little cynical - and it is! We have all done it. Every year, we make the same promises and every year, 4 weeks in, it has all gone by the wayside.
On the 1st of January, we say 'I'm going to get fit' or 'I'm losing this belly' or 'I'm giving up chocolate'. The problem is that we can't measure our achievements, as we fail to put a plan in place to bring them to fruition - this results in us just giving up before we have even started to see any changes. If this strikes a chord with you, you might be asking 'well then, how do I make it work?'.
The big point to make is that people need to be realistic in setting their goals and then commit to them. For instance, 'I'm going to get fit' could be changed to 'Im going to walk or run the 10km in Clonakilty at Easter' or 'Im going to run a full circuit at the pitch in Ahamilla, without stopping, by the 1st of March with the jog 4 all group'.
'Im going to lose this belly' might translate to 'Im going to knock an inch off my waist circumference before March 1st'. 'Im giving up chocolate' could be more achievable if you say 'I'm only having chocolate on a Saturday between now and Easter...and every time I think about buying a bar, I have to put 50cents into a jar'.
All of these goals are achievable if you know how. The problem for most people is that they put their hope into a 'quick fix'. We have seen it on every magazine; "5 simple steps to dropping a dress size" & "3 foods to eat to help you get abs like Jess Ennis".Well, the truth is that only training for the heptathlon in the Olympics is going to get you abs like Jess Ennis! And the 5 simple steps that we hear about are the following: 1. Cut all processed foods. 2. Cut alcohol. 3. Cut chocolate (and anything with sugar really). 4. Work out REALLY HARD. 5. Be consistent!

The steps are indeed simple - but they are tough to stick to if you don't REALLY want it!
Be realistic folks - if you are not willing to give up 5 pints on a Saturday night and a take away pizza after work on a tuesday, then you will never have the body of a sports fitness model - but you may be able to achieve a drop in dress size and a firmer physique if you train consistently and limit your dietary treats to a minimum. The only way to succeed is to be realistic with your goals and then make a plan to follow them. Consistency is key, which is why I have decided to start a fitness group for any individual who finds it difficult to stick to a programme. There is a plan to suit every goal and you can come to sessions once, twice or 3 times a week. Individuals of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to come out and give it a go. If you are consistent and stick to your training, you can often start to see changes in energy levels and mood within 3 weeks. After 6 weeks, most people will see the beginnings of physical changes to their shape and after 12 weeks, you can have made huge gains in fitness, body composition and your dress size. If you REALLY WANT to make changes to your body shape and if you are REALLY SERIOUS about changing your lifestyle - then I would love to help you. I am offering one person a FREE place on my 6 week NEW YEAR RESOLUTION exercise group. We will run, we will squat, we will sweat and you will love it! All you have to do is the following; 1. Share the link to this blog on your face book page. 2. Like West Cork Fit on facebook. 3. Post on the West Cork Fit facebook page when you have completed these steps. Its as easy as that.
Classes will start on Monday 28th of January and will be held in the morning and evening to accommodate all individuals. The winner will be announced on the 25th of January :) Happy sharing folks :)
